Choose your room but not a kitchen or bathroom due to reverb! Ideally, you want to be in a carpeted room, away from any television sets, kids’ bedrooms, etc., and make sure you are alone. If you can’t make it to a professional studio, you need as much privacy as possible when working on test reads for clients.
We’ve seen people use curtains, jackets and duvets which all work well! this will help remove any additional sound in the room, giving you an overall far clearer recording.
The best distance to have between you and your mobile device will depend on your device and settings, this may take a little trial and error to find the best distance but be sure to remove any phone cases and keep your fingers or any other obstructions well away from the device’s mic.
This might seem fairly obvious, but it’s easily forgotten and there’s nothing more frustrating than getting partway through a recording and a ping, vibration or general distraction ruining it for you!
Depending on your device and settings it offers, it’s worth a browse to see exactly what settings you can use to optimise your voice and cut down on distortion.
Once recorded, it’s worth listening back on a good set of headphones, these will give a more accurate sound than any smartphone speaker.
