China’s current population is just under 1.5 billion and Chinese Mandarin (or Standard Chinese) is a variety of Chinese spoken mainly in China, Taiwan and Singapore. It is also spoken in Malaysia, Indonesia, Mongolia, Brunei, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Russia, the USA, Laos, the UK and Mauritius. About one in six of the world’s population speaks a form of Chinese, Mandarin being by far the most widely used version, with over 800 million speakers. The number of native speakers is almost 1.2 billion, roughly a billion of whom speak Mandarin so there is no doubt that it is the most spoken language in the world.

Chinese Mandarin is a tonal language that uses thousands of logograms (written characters that represent a word or phrase) meaning that the pitch or intonation in which a sound is spoken affects the meaning. There are two standardized forms of Chinese Mandarin, namely Putonghua in Mainland China and Guoyu in Taiwan.
