Canada has two official languages, English and French. Although every province in Canada has people whose mother tongue is French, Québec is the only province where speakers of French are in the majority. Canada’s current population is nearly 40 million and French is the mother tongue of about 7.2 million Canadians (20.6 per cent of the Canadian population, second to English at 56 per cent).

Most linguists agree that the difference between Metropolitan (or Standard European) and Québec (or Canadian) French is larger than that of British and US English and is comparable to European versus Brazilian Portuguese. While both are rooted in early modern Classical French, they are two completely distinct varieties of French.
