Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly in north and central India, but also in Nepal, Singapore and South Africa. It is the official language of India, and is one of twenty-two major languages in the country, written in thirteen different scripts. English is the other official language used in India and the country has a current population of approximately 1.3 billion. Hindi is spoken by nearly 700 million native and non-native speakers.

There are several regional languages in India, such as Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi and Assamese, however Hindi is used by the largest number of people as their first language, while in the south of India there is a greater diversity of languages.

Hindi and many Indian languages use the Devanagari alphabet, which was originally used to write Sanskrit. Sanskrit is an ancient Indo-European language, the root of many modern Indian languages.
