German is used as the official language of Germany and Austria. It is also used as one of the four official languages of Switzerland, along with French, Italian and Romansh. Standard German has around 90 million native speakers, and there are approximately 80 million people who speak it as a second language (with a population of just over 82 million in Germany at present). Many others study German as a foreign language.

There are two principal divisions of the German language: High German, or Hochdeutsch, and Low German, or Plattdeutsch. One difference between these two divisions is the result of a consonant shift, usually referred to as the second, or High German, sound shift, which took place before the Eighth Century. Hochdeutsch is the standard German language heard today.
