More About the Swahili Language

Swahili is a Bantu language spoken primarily in Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda along the East African coast and adjacent littoral islands. The language is spoken by over 100 million people worldwide and is also spoken as a second language in many other African countries.

Swahili has many loanwords from other languages, mainly Arabic, as well as English, German and Portuguese.

There are about fifteen main Swahili dialects, as well as several pidgin forms in use. The three most important dialects are kiUnguia (or Kinguia), spoken in Zanzibar and the mainland areas of Tanzania; kiMvita (or Kimvita), spoken in Mombasa and other areas of Kenya; and kiAmu (or Kiamu), spoken on the island of Lamu and adjoining parts of the coast. Standard Swahili is based on the kiUnguja dialect.
