Finnish is a Finno-Ugric language, closely related to Estonian and more distantly to Hungarian. It’s not an Indo-European language such as French or Spanish, so the majority of words in Finnish will look totally unfamiliar to someone whose mother tongue is English. Finnish is the only language with more vowels than consonants in normal speech, and its melodic, vowel-rich words give it an undeniably exotic and beautiful sound. Finland has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. Both these languages have a long history in Finland. Approximately 90 per cent of Finns speak Finnish as their first language and roughly 5 per cent speak Swedish. Either language is acceptable when dealing with government officials.
