Ukrainian is an Eastern Slavonic language, and is the official state language of Ukraine, written using a Cyrillic script variant. The Ukrainian language shares some vocabulary with the languages of neighbouring Slavic nations, most notably with Belarusian, Polish, Russian, Serbian and Slovak. It is spoken by about 51 million people mainly in Ukraine; the country itself has a current population of just under 45 million, and also in many other countries including Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Paraguay, Poland, Romania, Russia and Slovakia.

Ukrainian is most popular in central and western Ukraine. In central Ukraine, both Russian and Ukrainian are equally spoken in the cities but in western Ukraine, Ukrainian is the dominant language used by the urban population. In the rural communities of these regions, Ukrainian is the most spoken language. Russian is the second most widely spoken language in Ukraine. In Kiev, Russian speakers outnumber the Ukrainian speakers. In the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine, Russian is the most popular language in the cities while Ukrainian remains dominant in the rural areas.
